The content of this course tries to provide comprehensive process-oriented coverage of the many facts and phases of landscape construction. It introduces the principles and techniques of basic site engineering for grading, drainage, earthwork, and road alignment. The text book(fifth edition), revised to stay up-to-date with current technologies in the field of landscape architecture, contains new information on topics such as sustainability, storm water management, green roofs, and CAD. It also features updated case studies and can be used in conjunction with a workbook of exercises and review questions for student and professional use. In brief, the course tries to make students better understand the process of constructing hard landscape improvements with the easy-to-follow instructions organized according to the construction process. From site preparation to the installation of the final project details, undergraduate students will learn how to implement a host of exterior construction projects, including retailing walls, paving, exterior carpentry, fencing and free-standing walls, as well as such amenities as, pools, paving, and edging. This course will be taught in both lecture and studio format. Lectures will be devoted to introduction of each new topic or presentation of construction procedure. Studio time will be devoted to individual instruction and desk critiques.
